About Our Parish Pastoral Council
St. Gabriel's Pastoral Council is a body of parishioners who have volunteer their time and talents to help in the work of the parish. Their three primary duties are:
Planning: As planners, council members serve as "scouts" who look into the future and plan the route that the parish will take. They gather information from parisioners at a planning retreat and formulate a vision of what our parish should be like 3 - 5 years from now. They set 5-year goals which are designed to achieve the vision. Annual objectives for each goal describe the steps we will take to further the goals. Each objective has one or more action plans that not only describe how the objectives will be met but who is responsible for the action, what it will cost, and what is the projected completion date.
Policy-making:The council makes policies which affect the whole parish but commissions and committies make policies which affect their particular areas. The pastor and staff implement policies, establish procedures and manages the day-to-day operations.
Budget Approval: The annual budget is prepared by committees, commissions, and administrative staff. The Finance Commission compiles and reviews the budget and presents it to the Pastoral Council for approval. The Council reviews the overall budget but if there is a problem the council does not change specific items. The budgets would be sent back to commissions or staff to make specific cuts or reallocations.
The Council consists of 6 at-large members and 9 commission chairpersons. The Pastor and Pastoral Associate are also council members. Officers consist of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and Secratary. They are discerned from among the at-large members.
