Catholic Schools Week
January 28-February 3
Scheduled Events
When I was asked to write an article for the Parish Bulletin and web site sharing information about the school, I did not have to be asked twice. I feel it is an honor and a privilege to "fill in for the Pastor." The school message I want to share is one of gratitude, appreciation, excitement, and challenge.
As St. Gabriel the Archangel School begins the celebration of Catholic Schools Week, January 28-February 3, 2001, we take time today to recognize one of the school's alumna, Ms. Catherine Cox. Ms. Cox is a 1970 graduate of St. Gabriel School and a 1974 graduate of Cardinal Ritter High School. She is an active member of this parish, serving as the Chairperson for the School Commission and volunteering to help with a variety of health programs in the school. Please join me in congratulating the recipient of the National Catholic Educational Association's Distinguished Graduate Award for 2001, Ms. Cathy Cox.
The theme for Catholic Schools Week is "Building a Foundation for Life." The faithful and supportive members of this parish create one part of the school's foundation. Many individuals include the school in their gifts of time and talent. The recent renovation of the Meeting Room into a parish Media Center has expanded our learning space and provided an attractive gathering space. The creation of a loft in the pole barn/garage opens up additional storage space for the International Festival equipment. Painting and cleaning the classrooms this summer included parishioners and school families working together to create an attractive learning environment for both students and teachers. I am very grateful to all of you for your continued support!
Another building block of our school's foundation is our faith, nourished by the Eucharistic liturgies, sacraments, and the spiritual formation opportunities/programs offered. The educational program for each student, preschool through eighth grade, includes daily formal religious education class. Students are taught the prayers, traditions, feasts, and beliefs of their Roman Catholic faith. Through the work of the Christian Service Committee the students are given opportunities to serve their parish and their community. The St. Vincent de Paul Society, local nursing homes, and our parish shut-ins receive materials and support through the students' acts of service. Students also work with their classroom teacher to plan the Friday 8:15 a.m. Mass. St. Gabriel the Archangel School provides an excellent support system for families in the faith formation of their children.
The academic program offers students the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to be a lifelong learner. Each student is challenged to reach his/her fullest potential in all of the academic subjects/skills; critical thinking skills, English grammar, literature, math computation and applied skills, science, social studies, art, music, computer, physical education, and Spanish are included in each student's academic program. Students in need of additional help may use the services of the full time Resource Room teacher. The only unsuccessful student is the student who does not try and does not come to school prepared to learn.
St. Gabriel the Archangel School truly "builds a foundation for life" for the students through the generous support of the parishioners, a program of faith formation and academic excellence is offered. Thank You!
