Extracurricular Activities
Server Schedule
St. Gabriel the Archangel School hosts a variety of quality extracurricular
activities in a Christian environment. Below is a partial list of
our activities. See the Parish
Bulletin and/or Friday Memo
for the latest information. Participation in all activities requires
maintaining C's and above on report cards. This includes music,
art, physical education, computer and conduct. A student who receives
a D or F on a report card will be unable to participate until the
next report card, if grades are brought up. If the report card is
issued during a sport season, the student will not be able to finish
the season.
YAC - Youth Activity Committee
YAC - Youth Activity Committee is the sponsoring committee for St.
Gabriel's sports program. Sports offered are: Football, Cross Country
Track, Kickball, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, and Track. The
sports program is open to students in grades 4-8 who are members
of the school or parish. Contact Jackie Murphy at the school for
more information. Click here
for more information.
Boy Scouts
Scouting is an important parish program. It not only teaches the
boys about the great outdoors, it gives them the opportunity to
see God's creativity. It teaches the importance of service to others.
Archbishop Daniel Buechlein was an Eagle Scout and many priests
of the diocese were scouts as well.
***** To get "Quality Unit" award we need all the leaders
and committee members to be trained. This is vital to survival of
the pack and decreasing stress of all the adult volunteers. The
pack will reimburse for the fee plus give all attendees a $5.00
of bonus bucks redeemable at the Scout Store. Lunch is provided
at the training session.
Chess
Chess has been a long standing extra curricular activity at St.
Gabriel. We have faired very well in past years both in the State
of Indiana and the Nation. Chess was introduced into Persia from
India during reign of Khusrau Nushirwan. (531AD -578AD). Chess has
a long historical value in that it was used to strategize WAR all
those years ago. Today this old game is played for enjoyment. The
kids get much enjoyment out of playing it. They also learn sportsmanship,
patience, math skills, logical thinking skills and notation skills.
This is an after school activity that lasts all school year long.
Academic Challenge
This after school activity is like "brain game". There
are two divisions - 5th and 6th grade and 7th and 8th grade. Students
practice after school and sometimes during recess answering questions.
When competition starts, meets are held once a week at Cardinal
Ritter High School, where St. Gabriel competes against other West
Deanery schools.
Spell Bowl
Spell bowl is a spelling activity but it is not a spelling bee.
Students write the word given to them on a piece of paper. Each
student gets 7 words at competition. Each word spelled right gets
them one point. Points are totalled for all students on the team.
Students practice after school and sometimes during recess for several
weeks prior to competition. There is only one competition evening
involved. St. Gabriel competes against other schools (public and
private) in the city. Spell bowl is also done in two divisions (4,5,6
and 7/8)
Green and Red Choir
There are two choir opportunities at St. Gabriel. Both choirs meet
after school once a week. Mrs. Kathy Bloom is the choir director..
Tryouts are held at the beginning of the school year. Anyone in
3rd grade and up may try out. Choir members sing at some school
Masses and sometimes travel into the community to sing for senior
citizens or the general public.

Yearbook
The yearbook committee develops and designs the yearbook to be sold
near the end of each school year. Students meet after school once
a week to make decisions related to this project.
Band
Band is available to students in 5th grade and up. Mr. Eddie Guanajuato,
from Ritter High School, travels to St. Gabriel once a week during
school hours to teach the students to play an instrument. There
are one or two band recitals held during the year at Cardinal Ritter.
Soon after the start of the school year, Mr. Guanajuato will invite
all students who are interested to sign up for band. Students will
need to buy or rent an instrument. Mr. Guanajuato helps the student
choose an instrument. To email Mr. Guanajuato: eguanajuato@cardinalritter.org.
Student Council
Student Council is a way for students to participate
in the process of policy making at St. Gabriel School. Each class
chooses representatives by voting. The representatives attend monthly
meetings, bringing the concerns and/or requests of his/her classmates.
