Community Outreach

The Outreach Commission is the ministry of our parish which oversees our Christian service and social justice programs. Below is an overview of the various committees and organizations which the commission covers. Watch this page for future feature articles about our outreach activities here at St. Gabriel.

The Outreach Commission is the arm of our community that tries to make a difference in our broader community and society as a whole. The commission is composed of a number of committees that carry on a wide variety of activities helping to make the Gospel present in our world.

The Pro-Life/Social Justice Committee has the task of implementing the Consistent Ethic of Life teaching of the Catholic Church. That teaching is very simply that every human person regardless of age or condition is a reflection of the Divine Life of Christ. The American Bishops have said that we do this work in three ways: a) Education b) Advocacy and c) Pastoral Care.

  • Education is teaching the Church's position on human life both to the Catholic Community and society-at-large. This is usually done by cooperation between the Outreach Commission and the Adult Catechetical Team.
  • Advocacy is working toward making our laws and society reflect Christian values. This includes working with the Indiana Catholic Conference on state legislation. It includes the formation of an Indiana Catholic Conference Network (ICCAN) which is activated during the State Legislature when appropriate.
  • Pastoral Care is the providing of those things necessary for quality human life. Such activity includes the work of our
    • Society of St. Vincent de Paul
    • Lucious Newsom Ministry
    • The ministry done by some parishioners at prisons.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Society regularly helps people in this area with food, rent, utilities and other basic necessities of life. They also prepare funeral meals to families at time of loss. The work done by our St. Vincent de Paul Society is supported by your contributions to the food collections each month and by the special collections when there is a fifth Sunday of the month; i.e. four times a year.

The Lucious Newsom ministry provides food for the poor and shares in the food collection each month.
